#1 indicators stopped working......

Post by Malk » Sat Nov 19, 2011 1:17 pm

Just been for a run and indicators have stopped working. Lights all good, hazards ok, flasher works too.....

From historic point of veiw is this most likely to be the actual stalk or just a fuse?

Saying that haven't located the fuse box yet. Assume under dash somewhere!

Any tips appreciated as was going out in it tonight to freinds......

Thanks,
Malcolm

The fuses are behind the let down centre panel, which is secured by two thumbscrews at the top left and right hand corners. beware of the fact that many cars will not allow the panel to be lowered without the radio console being removed - this is not as it should be but is a fact of life with many Es . You should also know that the hazards and flashers are intimately connected with each other. On my S2 I kept having indicator failures which actually were caused by a poor contact in the flasher switch, so that if I pressed the switch surround in a certain position , the flasher worked, but if I did not do this.......

Hi Malk,

Fuse box is, as with all E-types, under the centre dash. In each top corner of the centre dash there is a thumbscrew, remove these and the dash should fold down, you may need to hook something behind the top of the dash to move it as the only thing you can grab on the dash is the clock adjuster - not recommended! Saying that I have fingers like Pigs T*ts so if you have slimmer fingers, you may be able to fit them into the gap!

There are four fuse boxes (two fuses each) and, provided no-one has removed it there is a guide to what each fuse does. It is possible that the fuse is fine, but the contact may be loose/corroded. This can explain why sometimes a single circuit on a fuse supplying two or three other fuses may not work. Fuse 6 is the Direction Indicator Flashers and also supplies the wipers and stop lights. It is the second fuse down from the top on the Right Hand side.

For a wiring diagram try:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8496016/S3%20wiring.pdf

An alternative is of course that the flasher unit has failed; this is located on the right side of the car, just inboard and above the rh door hinge, I am looking at a photo with the trim removed and I can't remember exactly what you have to remove. For a clue - operate the Hazard flashers, as you say these still work, and the hazard flasher unit is right next to it - follow your ears!

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Simon

First thought was flasher unit but thought they may stay on constantly if this was the case or would that then be a relay?

Thanks,
M.

Thanks for pointers - apprciated and helpful for an E Type virgin!

It doesn't appear to be a fuse and looks very tidy under there! So either its the flasher unit or the actual contacts on the indicator stalk. I guess the flasher unit itself will be easiest first port of call!!

Indicators seem to be on same circuit as brake lights which are fine, doesn't bode well if that fuse does go, you'll loose indicators AND brake lights!

Did you check all the contacts? Put the indicators on, (with ignition on of course) and give all the contacts coming in to and out of the fuse a good wiggle, one of them will be to the indicators and may be loose, if so, you might restore function. Alternatively, check the flasher units and of course the cables to them as well.

Good luck.

I got my V12 just over a year ago and did a full strip re-build. Prior to this the car had done about 50 miles a year for the last 9 years. I have been plagued with intermittent electrical problems that are now only just starting to settle down with use. It blew fuses, lights would work one minute and then gone the next. I think when these cars aren't used the electrical contacts get coroded and don't contact properly, its only with use and wiggling everything around that you will cure the problems.

Looks to me like a 'pattern' flasher unit has been installed which really doesn't make sense at ?4 for a Lucas one! I assume all Lucas ones are branded. This just had 21W x2 +5W on it. Will see Tuesday once I receive new one!

Luckily mine gets a run every week at least once to take my son to footie and more if weather fine, most contacts actually look good. Only wire I know needs replacing is the rev counter cable seems dodgy!

Another issuue!! The one in the car has 2 connections, the Lucas round one from SNG has 3 terminals. Am missing a wire or is one redundant in the E and which one?

Hi Malk,

I'm pretty sure that SNG have sent you a Hazard flasher unit - the indicator unit was originally a Lucas unit called a 9FL 12V, which I think was replaced by an 8FL 12V. Both were rectangular, the earlier version was deeper and I don't know why it changed. Both have only two connections. They are common to many 70s British cars, including Mini and many Triumphs, so should be easy to replace, but there are many different flasher units, even just from Lucas.

I would have a look, but unfortunately my time has been taken by my other classic - a VW Camper, which has broken its' crankshaft! I have been a little busy!

Have another look at the wiring diagram, this shows the hazard flasher unit with three connections and the indicator unit with two. On my car at least, they are located in the same place behind the righthand dash.

I hope this helps,

You never rest do you?! If you fancy another project can always drop mine in..... :)

I've emailed SNG Barratt to ask question, the very useful wiring diagram shows 2, my car is 2 terminals and you correctly advise 2 so seeing what they are supplying and more importantly which 2 terminals of the 3 to use. Its round too and not square by picture!

Will advise.

Good luck with the V-dub!

Hi again,

Just looked at the SNG catalogue - the Indicator unit appears to be pt. no. C16063 and the hazard flasher unit C28520. However, looking at the image for C16063 it looks like the wrong item, with three connectors. SNG are my preferred suppliers, but perhaps they have it wrong in this case?

Its a much smaller unit depth wise, just fits in the holder where the one that was fitted (may be incorrect) petrudes. SNG part on box is JLM253 and not only works but clicks away now! Flashes a lot faster so that may be worth noting that it was on way out...... For ?3 I'll buy a spare next time I order.

For the record this doesn't come up under E's but XJ6!

M.

(Simon thanks for pointers - found few useful things during course of replacing this simple flasher unit!)

Excellent, glad to be of help and you have reminded me I want to change the flasher unit on my own car, which is far too quiet and, having got used to modern dashboards, the indicator dash warning light is very dim, especially in the bright Aussie sunshine 8)

However, all that will have to wait until the VW engine is rebuilt - I thought I could have a break until I got the call asking for a rescue from the Freeway a few days ago!

Otherwise I'd love to help you with restoration, however, there is the tiny question of distance....! (I lived on the Herts/Beds border until three years ago!)

Dear Malk and Simon,

Can I trouble you for the precise location of the flasher unit?? I am having similar issues with the indicator on my S1 4.2 but cannot seem to trace the location of the flasher unit.

With many thanks in advance for your help and best regards,

Arnoud

Bottom right under dash hard against the right hand side. Square silver box screwed by itslef with 2 or 3 wires from memory - if I can find it its easy to sort!!
