Brakes - temporary excessive pedal travel

Hi

I was driving my series 2 the other day and did an emergency stop drill just to test the cars braking capability. Whilst that all went Ok straightaway afterwards I noticed that the brake pedal had more than usual travel before the brakes worked. I carefully took the car back home and did a visual inspection of the brakes and following a second test drive the brakes felt back to normal again.

Would anyone be able to shed some light on what caused this and whether there are specific areas of the brakes I should be checking further.

The brake fluid levels are ok and no evidence of fluid leak

I would guess that after the hard brake test, the cylinders hadn't fully returned, and the excessive pedal travel being due to the extra distance the fluid had before it compressed.
if all seems ok now, i would recommend more regular use. Easy to say i know, but cars don?t like not being used

Many thanks for your help. I have owned the car for only 6 mths and have done approx 3000miles since however the previous owner who had it for 30 years did less than that in the whole time he owned it (about 50miles a year on average).

Mine was the same. Criminal leaving these babies locked up under blankets. Mine needed double press everytime when I bought it, was told slave cylinder was gone. After weekly use the brakes are brilliant and probably better than my new Audi A6 brakes to be fair!
