#1 Pressure fed oil gauge

Post by 265bhp » Sat Feb 11, 2012 9:38 pm

Hopefully this is not a daft question, but I have noticed that my car has a (oil ?) fed pressure sensor connection out of the back of the instrument

Is this normal for the early cars or because mine is an ex US car, or has it been modified over the years, as the other ones I see for sale do not have this same set up, they just seem to have electrical connectors.....

Thanks in advance

My car is chassis number 888330 from March 63

Regards
Jonathan

That is an upgrade. The electrical gauges can be temperamental after 40-50 years, although ultimately you are looking for changes in behaviour rather than absolutely accurate readings.

Is the hose copper or nylon? If copper make sure it doesn't short anything behind the panel or bend too acutely when raising/lowering the panel. If it's nylon make sure it doesn't chafe or touch anything too hot. A perforated nylon feed line in the cabin results in oil-sodden underfelt. Under the bonnet it causes a mess and eventual empty sump....

Thanks Peter, David

Just checked mine and it's using copper pipe which is sheathed within some kind of plastic outer cover
David, your thread explains a lot as I was wondering why my gauge went from 0 to 100 not to the normal 60.. Sadly it has the wrong font for the gauge so perhaps I can buy that from either of the two companies you list, I'll contact them in the week
Currently I have all my gauges in pieces on the desk here at home as they all need a cosmetic restoration as corrosion has damaged the dials and rubbers and paint

Do you know if anyone can supplely just the dial faces, as the black paint is damaged on some of them fairly badly and I will struggle to blow over the paint with a modellers airbrush without obscuring the old lettering, which is pretty yellowed anyway

Jonathan

Check out the list of suppliers in the Forum Knowledge Base but Speedograph Richfield immediately springs to mind fo this sort of restoration.
