#1 Slave Cylinder Puzzle

Post by johnben » Sat Apr 28, 2012 6:23 pm

I have a 2 + 2 with the 90mm hydrostatic slave cylinder, since replacing the thrust bearing which was worn out and the clutch, which was not, I decided to put in the 80mm cylinder with the return spring.
After installing it, I bled the system and found that the piston was emerging from the cylinder, on inspection I found no grove or circlip in the wall of the cylinder. It now appears I have just purchased a smaller version of what I had before.
As the reason for the greater length of the hydrostatic cylinder was to take up wear as the piston moved further down the barrel I wonder whether the piston will end up emerging as wear is taken up.
Surely a repo design fault and not an original, any suggestion before I get on to SNG?

I think the answer probably is that ,because you have changed the cylinder type you also need to change the pushrod to the adjustable length type. This should obviate the problem and is necessary in any event if you are to avoid problems with a dragging clutch

Christopher is perfectly correct, you need to change the push-rod to the shorter type or cut down your existing one to suit the new arrangement. I did it on my car - went to hydrostatic because I could not find a decent 80mm slave and went back to the latter when I found a NOS AP slave. I was plagued with faulty replacement seal kits.
