Strange noise under braking [series 1]

Hi folks,
Been hunting for the source of a strange noise under firm braking. the noise seems to emanate from the passenger side[RHD] and would seem to be towards the half-length region of the car, although this could be deceptive, ie. could it be at the rear torsion bar mount area!? The noise is similar to a very heavy 'click'[steel meeting steel?]. Been chasing this for a while and just wondered if anyone had an idea of source.

Sounds like you may have a loose upper bolt on the torsion bar reaction plate. The bolts used on this are a fairly precise fit and have a plain shank where they pass through the torsion bar end fitting/reaction plate. Maybe someone has fitted a totally threaded bolt instead of the plain shenk type?
Alternatively possibly an upper ball joint slack?
