#1 Installing a XJ6 4.2 in a Series II E-Type

Hello All, I can get a pre 1973 XJ6 4.2 engine and would like to know if I can install it into my Series II 2+2 without too many problems. It comes with starter and exhaust manifolds (that I might not be able to use) and I would like to add triple carbs and manual gear later. Are there any problems in this combination that I need to be aware of? Any advice is greatly appreciated, as always. Chris

There is absolutely no problem with the block and head which are a straight swap for the original . Since I recall yours is automatic you should be able to bolt your gearbox up to the torque converter plate . The starter should also be usable too. The exhaust manifolds will not fit an E, which have to have vertical downpipes . You will need to use the E type cast alloy sump also. You may find that you will need to change the front pulley , damper and water pump

If I can find one at a reasonable price, I'll get a manual gearbox for my 2+2 as well. From what I've heard so far I have the cheap guys' E-Type; an american 2+2 Series 2 with an automatic gearbox, so I want to spice it up a bit, to make it more representable :lol:

It does not matter which E-type you have, what matters is that you have an E-type. Thousands of people want one and millions will never own one. :wink:

The manifolds do fit, technically-speaking, but you'd need special downpipes made up and it gets tight down there so it's better to use E-type manifolds and standard exhaust.

I wrote an article for the JEC magazine in June(ish) 2010(?) covering the swap of a Series 3 engine. If you haven't bought your engine yet and you get the chance to buy a 79-86 4.2 that's what I'd get, although the 73 is closer to what your car would have had originally. The post 79 would be a nicer engine and the oil filter would fit.

I let that offer for the XJ6 engine pass, as Pete's response about finding a later version is extremely interesting. I'll look around and see if I can find that JEC magazine.

You're absolutely right, Warren. Every E-Type should be considered as special.
