#1 Judges comments on my car

Post by Tony » Fri Oct 09, 2015 11:13 am

Attached is 4 pictures of points picked up by the judges at the JEC Pride and Joy at the recent North Western meeting. In picture 1 it shows a grill over the air intake duct. They say this is an add on and not a Jag installation. In picture 2 it shows the petrol cap rubbers are missing. Where should they be placed in a March 62 car. In picture 3 they say the shock absorber is to close to the upper wishbone. In picture 4 they stated the back bulk head should be straight and not curved for a March 62 car. They state this has been changed.

Any views from the forum on what is right and what is wrong and has the car been altered from original

Apologise for the rather large pictures.

Tony : I cannot see the grille in P1 so cannot comment. The filler flap rubbers I always thought were on the flap itself , but I will have to go and have a look to check ! ( If they're not on the flap then they should be on the trailng edge of the aperture ) . The scallops behind the seats may not be original, but only a fool would ever not fit them when repair to this area was needed, because this was a factory mod to improve the much complained about lack of leg room. Finally, I've not the faintest idea what the judge was talking about in relation to the damper, and I doubt whether he/she had any idea what they were talking about either, since the wishbone position will inevitably vary in a fore/aft plane according to the setting for camber /caster action - note the screw threads on the fore/aft shaft which provides the adjustment

Finally, and it grieves me to say this about the JEC, about which as a fairly longstanding ( 23 years ) member I am generally positive, but at the Weston park show about 2 years ago I was absolutely disgusted at the antics of one of the concours judges who berated an old man who had brought along the most beautiful 2.5 litre Mark IV because he said that the battery holding down fastenings were of the wrong variety and when the owner dissented from this was quite disgracefully rude. Quite what the so called judge knew about these cars was questionable from other things that were said by him , and I am afraid this only reinforced my view about these competitions

1. there should be no grille over the fresh air duct:
Image
2. your petrol lid buffers are missing, fuel cap is wrong (if you want lockable you need the correct Wilmot-Breedon version WB7/8653):
Image
3. gap on both my cars is about 1/4"
4. curved bulkheads came in during June 1962, so yours are indeed "wrong". Quite a few cars seem to have been so modified for extra leg room. Major job to change it now!

Run through the Factory Fit thread and you will no doubt find more things. e.g heater box assembly, spinners, 2SJ Screenjet for example

Chris,

Thanks for the quick reply. In picture 1 the air intake duct in the bonnet which I presume feeds cool air to the air cleaner has a mesh grill over it, which as you stated is not clear from the picture. I must admit I have not seen it on any other early E types or later ones either. To be fair to the judges they were only making helpful comments and were very pleasant about it although I can understand your comments as people can get very touchy about crittersism either way. As I received second in class I cannot complaint to much and it was a great day out. If this was. Pride and Joy class, God knows what Concours would be like, but at least I got a good parking spot.

Dave, As my car number is 876959 (originally LHD) then as you state it should have a flat rear bulk head. My car has the recessed floor panel so is this correct for a date of manufacture 26th March 62 car or will they also have been fitted later.

Flat floors were changed to dished floors in January 1962 - #876582 in the case of LHD OTS - so you should have the latter:

Hi Tony.....out of interest you say that your car was originally a LHD...don't the judges look at this and then mark down for all the non original conversion items.......glad to hear you had a good day out.. Steve

Thanks Dave, as usual you have exceeded expectation. I do not intend changing the car back for originality and as Christopher said would be crazy to do so. I suppose I could remove the mesh from the air intake but it stops the odd leaves and rubbish getting into the air filter. I have ordered up the petrol cap rubbers and maybe get a new none locking petrol cap.

Off to the JEC trim seminar tomorrow so we shall see what that bring about.

Thanks again Chris and Dave

Hi Steve, looking at my scores they did not seem to mark me down for the conversion or any of the other points. To be fair there was a better E type that won it but for interest my scores were.

Bodywork 19 out of 20
Wheels and tyres 10 out 10
Interior 17 out of 20
Engine 17 out of 20. Bit disappointed at that as it is still Dynamo and positive earth.
Documentation 10 out of 10
Milage 2 points. 1 point per 500 miles. Pity they only based it on previous years when i really did do some mileage.

I imagine Dave Jones (Heuer) could have won it on mileage alone. Dave, where does Heuer come from?

I collect Heuer sports watches from the 1960's especially the car related ones, hence my various Avatars. The current Avatar is a 'Jo Siffert' Autavia (from "AUTos" and "AVIAtion") self winding chronoraph, so called because then owner Jack Heuer sponsored motor racing and Siffert was their star and chose that watch as his own. They also produced their range of dashboard timepieces used for rally timing and fitted to Harrier jump jets. In the early 1970s Heuer expanded its line of automatic chronographs to include the Daytona, Montreal, Silverstone, Calculator, Monza and Jarama models. The square Monaco watch was made famous by Steve McQueen wearing it in '24 Hours of Le Mans'. It all changed in 1985 when TAG bought the company and renamed it TAG-Heuer. All you could ever want to know here: http://www.onthedash.com/ Great watches with a lot of history and far nicer to own than some of the modern car related cynical marketing opportunities and nowhere near the price of old Rolex's and Omega's.

When I first joined the Forum I was asked for a username and was a bit stuck then looked at my wrist and bingo!

Tony, be very careful. You are heading down a slippery slope! You do need to fit buffers to your car as thr fuel filler flap will fret the paint away. Buy them from either BAS or Hutsons as they have the correct ones.

Wishbone too close to shock absorber? What are they talking about! That thread on the upper fulchrum shaft sets the castor angle. It does look excessive though and l would get it checked. But, if the castor is correct at that setting......

Don't worry Angus, I am not becoming a detail nut or will enter to many competition. I do not think my car would not stand up to to much scrutiny. It will alway be just a nice example.

I was just asking from a interest point of view and I do not intend spending to much time on detail. As the car is running so well I have very little else to add to the forum. Thanks for the advice.

I agree; the wishbone does look like it's wound a little further forward than normal so I would get someone with lots of E Type wheel alignment experience to measure your castor angles on both sides. They should be approximately equal and between 2 and 3 degrees.

The gap between the wishbone and the shock per se is irrelevant IMO.

However if the steering self centres acceptably and is not too heavy I'd be tempted just to leave it alone.

I guess the judges missed the modern cable tie in picture 3, they were blinded by the shocker / wishbone gap :D

The wire wound brake pipes are interesting. I have seen them on a Factory Competitions Department prepared car but never on a road car. Be interested to know if they are original, although after 50+ years I doubt it.

Thanks everybody for the comments

Abowie - the steering is heavy when getting out of tight space but is fine when moving over 5mph so I do not feel as if there is to much castor.

Davis Oslo, interesting to know the cable tie is wrong. It is something that can be changed relatively cheap. I like cheap fixes. What should they look like?

David, Don't know where the wire wound brake pipes came from but suspect they are new.

The cable strapping is used everywhere on the E-Type, including retaining brake pipes and hoses: http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y186/q ... G_6023.jpg

Available from Hutsons for buttons and very easy to use . If you only want a few inches, Tony, I think I still have some left and some studs to go with it
