#1 Fitting new rubber bump stop in gearbox crossmember

Post by jivili » Tue Dec 01, 2015 5:04 pm

Can anyone tell me how to fit a new rubber bump stop into the gearbox crossmember on an S3.
The original one had been hacksawed in half but I am guessing that there must be a way to fit it without resorting to this.
The new one that I have is very stiff with a 10mm deep flange on both ends and I thought that I might be able to squeeze it in with a bit of lube and a g clamp but no joy

Thanks

Dear Dean,

Pre-assemble it all with very long screws holding the trapezium bit so it is located in the right place and cannot slip off or away. These screws are only there to align everything over the gearbox pin.

Then jack under the trapezium shaped metal until you are close enough to swap out any long screws with the correct washers and short bolts as shown in the parts manual.

Once these are in, it is safe to remove the jack and do up the bolts.

kind regards
Marek

Thanks for that Marek
What I really wanted to ask was is the rubber 'cotton reel' shaped rubber bush supposed to be set into the trapezium shaped crossmember?
When I stripped the car this was covered in oil and the consistency of plasticine and too be honest I can't remember how it was as when I undid the mount there was still a bit of tension on it and everything flew apart

It's a bump stop.
It'll do nothing while the spring is doing its Zebedee impression, but bump too much and it'll put an end to "goings". That means you don't need to worry too much about it, other than making sure it is present.

Use the parts manual as your guide.

kind regards
Marek
