Differential output seal rings: Rubber or leather ?

All,

I managed to find a set of RUBBER seals for my S1 2+2?s differential.

Now, the seller told me it is "only rubber, not leather".

The ones I took out (45 yrs old) are leather (and DEAD).

Now- shall I better search for leather ones, or would the double-lip- rubber- ones he has be fine ? I won?t race it, but the autobahn is near :-).

I fitted rubber as you call it, they are not rubber can't remember what they call the material they are made out of now.
Anyway I fitted them around 10 years ago and not one drip of oil from them.
Remember they only fitted leather because something better wasn't available 40 or 50 years ago.

OK- I thought leather would be more heat resistant then the "rubber", but now I think I?ll get a set.

I never went to a Jag dealer for any bearings or seals they will sell you standard fit at very expensive prices. In the UK there are companies like British bearing services (BSL) I'm sure Germany has it's fair share.

Give them the sizes and explain what they will be used for and they will supply the correct material and temp range.

Same with the needle bearings in the lower wishbones....
