Post by drichards » Mon Oct 13, 2008 1:13 am

I need to replace the 4 rear suspension springs and was wondering whether there was a modern replacement or do I need to go with replacement E Type springs

There are much improved dampers arround now but the old coil spring is little changed.

I've not heard great reports of the new springs available from the usual parts suppliers but I gather from David (Huer) that CMC are able supply new springs with some spring in them.

Indeed. My springs had been cut down to lower the suspension so when I got fed up with grounding the car on the ever present speed bumps new springs were required. Everyone I spoke to warned that the new springs were "different" and "not as good" as the original items but CMC installed a new set and they have been perfect. The key is to not necessarily install 'original spec' springs but select a set that gives the required compliance. Mine have a blue stripe (originals had a red stripe) and the handling is fantastic. Also be aware of the types of shock absorbers you use. My car was fitted with Koni Classics and the fronts only lasted 7,500 miles whilst the rears managed 18,000 before failing. Basically the quality has gone down the tube but the guys at CMC reckon Koni's do not suit the E-Type anyway, even when working properly. The 'adjustable' feature is pointless as no one ever adjusts them once on the car. They also counseled against Spax adjustable (adjusting 'clicker' control fails) and fitted standard Spax which, combined with the new springs, work exceedingly well. Just shows you cannot rely on rumour or hearsay, experience is everything!
