#1 Radiator stoneguard

Post by rossbraithwaite » Sun Jun 09, 2013 9:02 pm

Hello All, I wonder if you can help? Here is an under bonnet pic of my S1.5 FHC. The mechanicals seem to be largely S2 spec some of which you can see in the pic. As you can see there is no stoneguard fitted in the bonnet. I have bought one and tried to fit it but it fouls the radiator. I have read about 2 sets of holes but my bonnet only has one set. Is it possible that the radiator is too far forward? there isn't much clearance between the rad fans and the picture frame so it couldn't move back much. Could the bonnet be from an earlier car?
Thanks for your help.
Ross

It's possible that someone built up a radiator with a thicker core, but another possibility is that your bonnet is shorter than most and has had most or all of its shims removed to get an acceptable gap where it meets the scuttle.

There was a thread on the S1 stoneguard here which you might find useful: http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... tone+guard

Thanks David, I had read this thread already but it doesn't help. Am I right in thinking that the majority of S1.5 e types don't have a stoneguard fitted due to having the bonnet of an S1 but the cooling system of an S2?

Well according to Angus (who is restoring an S2 at the moment):

"The radiator shield was bolted in place on the front of the car - important item as it protects the radiator from stone damage and helps direct the airflow when on the move." http://mossjaguar.com/in-the-workshop.html

Maybe worth sending him a PM?

Ross, I don't understand why you are having problems as the radiator mounts are the same for the S1 and S2 cars. You can't move the radiator forwards or back providing it is bolted onto the lower mounts on the bonnet support frame. The repro guards are too wide and I have had to strip them down in the past and shortened the width. Are you sure you are picking up the right holes in the bonnet to fit it? (there are 3 or 4 self tappers that hold it in place. Wouldn't mind seeing some more shots of the area in front of the rad.

The holes in the bonnet are roughly in line with the front of the rad. Also, the otter switch and connections stick out so far from the rad that at least 1.5" clearance would be required. As you can see the bonnet has been butchered in the past so I suspect that something is not original. I suspect that it is a combination of the S1.5 being a mix of parts and then whilst in America being modified in some way.
Thanks
Ross
