#1 66 Jag XKE - maintenance questions

Post by ScottMHoffman » Tue Jul 09, 2013 10:09 pm

Just took ownership of the 66 Jag and my uncle had a dealer do the maintenance. I like to do my own and have some questions.

1) Have a 2 post lift, what should I use as lift points. Found the jacket points but they are pins and would not be stable. Should I drill a hole in wood to go around pins and use that?
2) Weight of motor oil?
3) gear oil weight for rear and manual trans?
4) Brake fuild - told to use Castrol LMA but does not exist. Should I use DOT 4 with low moisture content?
5) Are the clutch and brake fuild the same?

If you have pins front and rear it must be a 2+2, right? Best to put that in your signature.

Everything you need to know is in the manuals or owner's handbook which you can buy from the JCNA Shoppe at www.jcna.com

Without a manual you can't realistically take the dealer's maintenance role.

1 Yes
2 20-50
3 Normal EP gearbox / axle oils but with limited slip additive for the diff.
4 Yes
5 Yes

I would post a photo but I do not know how to resize a photo to make it small enough. The Jag is a convertible.

I have the original manual and a aftermarket repair manual. They are older and the oil recommendations are dated.

Would the rear end additive be the same as you additive used by GM in for their limited slip rears of the same vintage car?

Scott

You don't really need to resize the picture it willo be done automagically for you. Try following these instructions: http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1666

If it has jacking point pips behind each front wheel and in front of each rear wheel it's a long wheelbase car. The convertibles had a single square lifting point halfway along each sill which are obviously no good for 2-post lifts. The only convertibles with jacking points like yours are the 71-75 V12s so if your 66 has them it must be a 2+2 chop job with a VIN starting 1E. Can you supply the VIN number?

GM axles may have been lockers not LSD - an American lister here may know. Basically, it's a different mechanism to the friction one with clutch packs like Jag. It's essentially the same as Dana Jeep diffs, so any oil for a Dana limited slip pumpkin should work AFAIK. Orf just do the obvious and just buy any Jag vendor's LSD oil. Your options are basically to add friction modifier to non LSD oil or use the combo oil already mixed, which many of us prefer. It's not something you have to change very often.

VIN is 1e12281. My Uncle purchased new in 1966 so it should not be modified. I could be wrong about what I am looking at. Behind the front tire is an oval pin and in front of the rear wheel is a threaded stud. I will have to look for the correct jack point in the middle.

Looks like I have to find somewhere else to lift the car.

No, that's fine. 1E12281 is a convertible so you must not have the LWB pins.

Look on XKEData.com when you put your car on there - amongst the tens of thousands of photos there will be some on lifts, or look up 2-post lift threads here or on the E-type forum on www.jag-lovers.org. This has been discussed many times and there are a variety of safe lifting options.

You can post your photos on there too for us to see.

I have tried again to get a avatar photo added but is just will not accept. The photo I have is small enough as far as I know but it still will not work.

Scott

We have had problems uploading avatars since we moved servers. The work around is as follows:

You need to put your chosen avatar photo on Photobucket and link to it using the Photobucket 'Direct Link' address. Photo needs to be no more than 200x200 pixels and 15k in size. It will work if you paste a link into the "Link to off-site Avatar:" box.

Try pasting this link as an experiment: http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y186/q ... al/red.jpg

Image

It fails when you see that small three colour box instead of the picture you want.

thanks for letting me know. I am not interested in messing with photobucket. Do not want another account somewhere for just one photo.
