#1 4.2 Low oil pressure

Hello everyone,
I own a 1969 S2 2+2 and are currently experiencing very low oil pressure, at idle it is only about 5lbs and even giving some rev?s the pressure does not change, all of which is somewhat worrying!
Up to this point the engine has been running well with no issues and good oil pressure, it had an oil and filter change 500 miles ago and refilled with 20/50 mineral oil.
The problems started with the oil pressure start going all over the place, one minute at 20lbs at 2000rpm, next 40lbs, at one stage it would not go above 20lb and now 5ibs. As yet I cannot hear any expensive knocks and noises!
So after investigations on the forum far I have so far done the following with no improvements in oil pressure,
1. Replaced the oil pressure gauge and sender with a JEC version.
2. Tested the gauge and sender with an air line, reports the correct readings.
3. Removed oil filter head (this is later XJ6 version), cleaned and replaced the relief valve.
4. Replaced the oil filter.
My only conclusion is the oil pump is the issue so dropping the sump would be my next action unless anyone have any other suggestions. My understanding is the sump can be dropped whilst the engine is in the car and the oil pump replaced.
Your thoughts and comments are most welcome!
Many thanks
