#1 6 litre engine.

Post by Fspp369 » Wed Jun 22, 2022 1:58 pm

Hello forum members,
I’m still looking for ways to upgrade my S3 OTS and my desire is to eliminate as much of the “stuff” that hangs around the top of the engine, such as distributer, air pipes valves and allied things, if you follow my drift!
I’ve been offered a 6l v12, from a Daimler double six, so, distributor less, coil packs, modern” ECU, fewer air valves etc, better inlet tracts etc etc.
I’m not after power I just want smooth, quiet, reliable power, minimal exhaust emissions (cat in system already). With potentially ECU output to a gearbox controller.!

I would appreciate peoples thoughts …should I bother or just get my present efi engine tidied, by using other control systems?
Peter.

Dear Peter,
it's probably a good idea to post up a few pictures of what you currently have and point at the bits you like and dislike about it. Pretty much everything about electrics, oil and water on a post 1974 v12 does not fit the etype, so those changes need to be carried over from your current (HE) engine. There are also lots of different ECUs used by Jaguar (Lucas, Nippon Denso, etc) as well as aftermarket ECUs capable of running a six litre engine. Lastly, the bolt pattern for the gearbox and the locating dowel positions of a 6litre block are different to the earlier HEs.

A lot of "restomods" have been done, but I'd ask the advice of someone like Keith Vincent what constitutes a significant change in technical specification if you are also contemplating keeping up historic status for tax (and MOT) purposes. As I recall, the original government pitch of their draft legislation was that adding more 15% to the power output would fall foul of the ability to claim historic status, so that would impact the need to get your car MOTd were that to be interpreted purposively.

I am near Guildford if you want to see how I have tackled all of these issues.

kind regards
Marek

Marek,
That is a super helpful reply, than you. I hadn’t appreciated the bolt pattern issue etc.
I’ll PM you about Guildford.
Regards
Peter.
