#1 Crankshaft Pulley

Post by simong » Fri Jul 26, 2013 2:23 pm

Hello everyone,

I am having to drop the sump of my S2 2+2 to replace the oil pump whilst the engine is in the car and are struggling to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt. My question is what is the best way to lock /stop the crank turning? Also I assume the bolt is standard thread and not reverse. I have removed the 4 bolts and retaining/locking shim.

Many thanks

Dear Simon,

The traditional way is to remove the starter motor and wedge bits of hardwood into the gap so the ring gear cannot turn antoclockwise.

kind regards
Marek

I may be being stupid here, but can you get to the sump bolts lurking behind the crank pulley and damper without taking them off? If so, is it not possible to remove the sump without removing the crank pulley?

I can see you may want to change the front oil seal while you're in there, but you could also lock the crank once the sump is off in a variety of ways.

I definitely managed to get the sump off without removing the pulley.

Tried in vain to remove same and in the end gave up. Once I had the bolt undone the pulley itself wouldn't shift.

So with a bit of lifting, wiggling, bad language and grazed knuckles off the sump came.

To answer the question, put it in top gear and apply the handbrake and/or footbrake if needed. To echo the others, don't bother removing the pulley. You will need to juggle the crank position so the rear web doen't stop the sump clearing the reaction plate. About 40mm down from TDC on #1 or #6 is a good start.
