#1 1968 Series 1.2 FHC....Brake caliper/piston re-build

I am looking at rebuilding my front brake calipers/pistons and am considering buying new calipers with stainless steel sleeves and new seals for the pistons. Does this seem sensible? And if so how do you replace the stiff piston seal on the piston? Does it come apart and do you need a special tool?

OK....my first post was a bit stupid! I can see that the seals pull off very easily! However, thye piston goes in and out of the caliper with a pin as some sort of guide. Mine are very stiff even wothout the seal in place. Presumably it should glide in and out very easily. The pin looks very clean, is it crud inside the piston guide hole or should it be very tight?

Buy a set of Zeus callipers because if you do intend to use the originals they should be re sleeved with s/s and matching pistons otherwise they will probably start to deteriorate fairly quickly over winter.

The pistons are stiff on the pin, even when new. There is a compensation mechanism inside the piston which grips the pin tightly.

I've been thinking of going the Volvo route...I like to do things that hard way! Have downloaded several interesting articles but putting in links here is a bit beyond me...I'll try harder if its of interest but quite possibly its already been done here anyway? I did notice though that reconditioned 4 piston Girling calipers for the Volvo are only ?50 a side....

Hi All,
I am doing exactly the same and am struggling to get the piston out of the caliper. I have blown them out using the brake system but once the seal is broken and fluid escapes the piston is still very stiff. Do you know how to get the piston out this last little bit?
