What grease to use
#1 What grease to use
I have searched under grease with no joy. Can anybody advise what type of grease to use on all the grease points?

I use a Lithium based general purpose grease or LM2 high melting point cartridges.

David,
I bought an air grease gun some time back but have never used it. Do I have to fill it with grease or can you buy a cartridge for the air grease guns.
Another daft question but how do you know how much to pump in or do you wait for it to spew out the sides

Yes you can use cartridges, preferable also as there is less chance of introducing contamination. For a list of Jaguar recommended lubricants (oils and grease's), lift the bonnet and take a look at the data plate riveted to the top of the right side inner sill underneath the fuel filter.

As Johnny says you can buy 400gm grease cartridges and there are lots on eBay. Only problem I have ever come across it some of the cheaper air grease guns are about 1mm too narrow to accept the cartridge
But those air guns do make greasing a real doddle. For anyone who does not have an air line to hand Sealey sell a battery operated gun which works superbly.

I too use an air powered grease gun. easy to use, clean grease because of the cartridges and so much quicker.

Chris,
What grease do you use and where do you get it from. I am trying to get Lm2 as per David's recommendation but they all seem to quote EP2. Do you know the difference?

I think I bought it off fleabay to be honest... its been quite a while and I bought 3 or 4 at the time.
The funniest moment was not realising how quick it filled a ball joint and when I looked down I saw a loooooooong snake of new grease coming out the side of the rubber boot. Now I keep a closer watch :)

Lots for sale on eBay: http://tinyurl.com/nt3axle
LM2 is a high melting point Lithium based grease suitable for general purpose use on bearings and chassis joints
EP2 grease is 'Extreme Pressure' grease normally used on trucks and agricultural machinery. It is still Lithium based so just use whatever you can find.

Well, I have started but not finished greasing the car. I still have to do the uv joint on the gearbox end which seems to be inaccessible and completely boxed in. I also have to take the wheels off to do the rear axel hubs and presumable the front wheels also? Are there grease nipples on the front wheel bearings?

Tony : E types of different eras have different holes in the gearbox cover but I would expect yours to have a hole about 2.5 inches diameter at the rear end of the side cover , probably on the lhs but it could be the right ! You have to pull the carpet side pieces down and remove them ( the push back easily enough under the console sides, and you will then find a large rubber plug. You can probably see which side from underneath by shining a strong light at the cover sides . There are grease nipples on the front hubs between the splined part and the disc flange. Be careful with the rear hubs - they do not need over greasing as too much grease has a tendency to blow the "tophat" bungs out - I find the best way is to put a blob of grease on a spatula, insert it in the hole in the hub carrier and then turn the hub so that the grease reaches the full circumference of the bearing. You will probably need 2 or 3 blobs per side
