I have a 69 Series 2 and cant figure out where the three way brake valve should be mounted on the picture frame.

Also this car has a V12 front anti roll bar, is this common? does the V 12 have an uprated picture frame?

On the S2, the brake union is fitted under the bolt head, on the inner LH bolt between the engine frame and the picture frame:

I should have added that there is a spacer fitted between the frame and the union, I assume to provide clearance for a spanner

I would have thought that it is unusual to have a v12 roll bar fitted to a non-v12 car. If it is a different thickness then the ride quality will alter. Whether this is for the better or worse, I do not know, but the v12 literature at the time made a point of the fact that the geometry was "anti-dive". The front end of the v12 will also be slightly heavier than the 6 cylinder car. The v12s did not have an anti roll bar at the rear.

(The brake union on the v12 cars is on the other side (engine side) but in much the same place on the bottom of the picture frame. The v12 picture frame is more of a U with a removable top piece.)

Hi Marek,

I have measured the bar and it is 23mm in diameter and it actually cracked the previous picture frame at the point of mounting, I will get a replacement bar of the correct diameter.

Dear John,

I'd hazard a guess that it was overtightened and the rubber bushes didn't fit too well. A cracked frame will be less rigid than one which is intact.

The pupose of the bar is to transfer the suspension movement from one side to the other, and the bar acts as a spring as it twists and untwists during this operation. It isn't supposed to transfer any load into the picture frame so the frame ought not to crack as a result of ordinary usage.

is there a tube that goes in the picture frame where the bolts holding the roll bar brackets go through? it would seem to me that there should be some kind of support to stop the ' walls ' of the a frame collapsing when the bolts are tightened?

Dear John,

You are simply going to have to refer back to the parts manual. You have already told us that you have a non-standard car in respect of the front suspension, so it isn't obvious what either of us is looking at here. On the v12, the anti-roll bar attaches to two brackets which are held onto the bonnet support frame, not the picture frame. The v12 picture frame and bonnet support frames will be totally different to the earlier cars.

Hi Marek,

I have found out to day that it is only the roll bar that is out of spec, measuring 23mm as opposed to the original which measures just over 19mm

When i bought the car last year it came with the 23mm bar attached to the picture frame. The problem I have is that I did not strip the car and the guy who did it said that the bar was from a V12, otherwise it is standard series 2 with matching numbers.

I have done a total rebuild on the car and having not taken it apart, are having a lot of problems finding out where things go as I do not have a manual.
