#1 Replacement Sound/Heat deadening matting

Post by Alty Ian » Mon Nov 11, 2013 4:54 pm

Hi All

I am restoring my S3 2+2 at present and need to improve the heat insulation and sound insulation especially from the transmission tunnel as it gets very hot in the summer on long runs.

I have bought some new stainless steel heat shields that go inside the tunnel but want to use a foil faced one to seal the inside of the car like Cool-It or equivalent. You often see pics of cars with this type of product which would replace the 8mm foam (hardura?) mats in E Types which are not continuous and certainly dont stop the heat well enough.

Can anyone please recommend the best product that I can get in the UK?

The shiny aluminium backed stuff is useless on the inside of the car as it is intended to reflect heat. It needs to be installed on the underside of the transmission tunnel to be of any use. For the inside you need Kool-Mat which is superb: http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... ht=koolmat

Thanks David, is it available anywhere in the UK yet? Seems quite expensive.

Only in the US but if you buy it on the roll and cut it yourself it is a lot cheaper. Best product out there especially for an FHC.

Thanks Dave, it does seem to be the best stuff but very pricey. However, at least we wont be fried in the summer :D How long will it take to deliver from the US? Ian

Don't bother with the ready cut kit because a) it is expensive and b) it still needs to be cut to fit  Buy off the roll - took about a week to get to me IIRC. They are very quick to send it out. To explain how good it is I can hold a piece around a hot manifold and barely feel any heat coming through. It also acts as very effective sound deadening

Hi Ian

It's worth the extra cost and messy fingers sticking it down! My footwells are water proof and I take the underlay and mats out to dry if they get wet from shoes etc.
