My series 3 is fitted with a motorola radio which no longer works, can anyone recommend a suitable retro replacement with FM and ipod attachment? or am I best getting it restored and having an ipod lead etc added?

This must be a common problem.

Hi. I had a Motorola five button converted to Fm but I have to say its not good. It does not hold its frequency and I would not do it again

I have a unit in another car which blue tooth connects to my iPhone radio and of course the phone. Much better. Cannot recall the name of it but if you can't find one let me know and I will check the name. Good luck.

I have a modern radio but with two knob control like the old style, from Custom Autosound. When I bought it I could only find them in USA but they are more common around the world now. I think the latest ones include iPod inputs but mine has a USB for a flash drive and a 3.5 mm aux input. Tuning is digital but when off looks like an old radio. FM and AM with the options for output to subwoofer and 4 speakers if desired. You can get modern speakers to fit in the holes behind the seats on Series 3 cars. Also has control for the electric aerial and you can fit and control a cd changer too. I kept it simple -two speakers a flash drive and 3.5 mm in the centre console glove box.

The conversion boards they put into old chassis' do not work at all well and the cost is ridiculous. Better idea is to use one of the retro-look radios and 'borrow' the knobs from the original. More info here:

Have you tried vintage wireless company , 174 Cross st , Sale . Tel 0161 973 0438. Always at Tatton Park, Classic car show with a good selection of radios converted to IPod and Fm

I seem to recall the latest Coventry Quarterly email from XKS Unlimited had a selection of "retro" radios in it.
Might be worth a look at their site.

Funnily enough yes as they are very close to me, however they are very expensive and I'm not sure its worth it wasting money fixing an old radio and adding FM when FM its soon to be phased out,...I hear. Plus I dont use ipods, bit of a luddite me thinks!

FM going to be around for the foreseeable future. Buy a working Motorola or similar or get a Retro-Sound radio.
