Not yet owning an E Type I have been reading all about the issues of ongoing maintenance. A publication by Jonathan Wood advises that the clutch will require to be replaced every 30000 miles or 48279 kms! involving the engine/gearbox unit to be removed to replace it.
This seems to me to be excessive or am I not being trealistic about gearbox maintenance?

You're fine - it's Mr Wood who is being unrealistic. Apart from which, gearbox maintenance wouldn't affect the clutch, apart from seal replacement.
