My gear knob on my series 2 2+2 is worn, so got a nice new one. But can't get the old one off! Am I trying to remove just the knob, or the tapered chrome bit underneath? Any tips will be gratefully appreciated!
Here's a picture of it:

get a nicely fitting open end spanner on the flats of the tapered chrome piece and (as you look down on the gear knob, turn it clockwise (as if doing it up). At the same time, turn the gear knob anti clock to unscrewit.
Ah! Thanks! I was trying to get the chrome shoulder off too, rather than just the knob! Done it now - I know the gear knob isn't original, but I think it looks nice, The growler in the middle of the knob matches my steering wheel one exactly, and I haven't seen that elsewhere.
