#1 Dynalite Alternator

Post by Peter27 » Sat May 23, 2015 4:12 pm

I have 1963 3.8, positive earth. I fitted a Dynalite alternator some time ago but it is only delivering 14 amps maximum and output voltage never gets above 12.5 volts. The wiring (including earth) has been checked including the relay (3 times!). The belt tension has also been checked. I have sent it back to the manufacturer and they have bench tested it but say it is performing correctly (although I do not know whether they checked it on a positive earth set-up). Does anybody have any experience of this unit on a positive earth car?

Hi Steve. Yes the original dynamo was a C42 and the Dynalite is correct replacement. I have to be honest in that I did not get details from the manufacturer when they bench tested, other than it was OK. Yes using a proper test meter and had it checked by a very experienced mechanic. Thinking I may have to take car to the manufacturer and get them to test it on the car....or put the dynamo back on!

Peter,

What voltage is your battery showing across the terminals? I'm not sure of the internal regulation of the dynalite... it may well be clamping its voltage output to suit whatever voltage your battery presents to it (that would be one possible explanation of 14A at 12.5)

Hi Peter.....just looked up there web site....thay have no operational details on there, although it does say it is self regulating and that its not to be wired via the existing control box......as Andrew says above...it could be fixing itself to youe battery voltage.....call there tech guys and ask for details of how it works Steve

May be worth reading this thread: viewtopic.php?t=6668 as it shows you how to wire an alternator in a 3.8.

With the engine not running battery is showing 2.5 volts. At 2,000 rpm the reading is at 12.8v. I will check the thread as suggested (thanks) although I am 99% confident wiring is correct. Think it may be time to get the manufacturer involved again. Will report back when the problem is found.

Especially given the cost of the Dynalight.

Suggests the regulator is cutting in at 12.5 v rather than 14.3v.

Said I would report back once resolved. I sent the Dynalite back to the manufacturers to be retested and was informed once again it was OK. Not particularly satisfied with this, so I sent the unit away for independent testing and it was confirmed that although it was generating to a degree, it was "very weak". So I suppose I could have just got a bad 'un...With the assistance of a very helpful and understanding retailer, it was changed to a Dynator version, which now works perfectly. I could be a bit resentful about all of the time wasted checking wiring, removing and refitting the Dynalite, cost of shipping the item around the country etc. but prefer to focus on the end result! Thanks for all the input.
