#1 Ignition light

Post by Zippowbang » Wed Mar 04, 2020 10:58 am

So new to all of this. I have owned an E Type series 1 drop head for the last 35 years. Trying to get the old girl going for spring. Car turns over doesn’t start. After fiddling for 2 hours adjust the points and finally change coil that seems to do the trick. However when you switch the ignition on, NO IGNITION LIGHT. HOWEVER ONCE IT IS GOING THE IGNITION LIGHT IS ON THE WHOLE TIME. What is occurring. What have I done to cause that.

Is your oil pressure coming up ,
As the red light on a series 1 is oil pressure and works in conjunction with a relay to also be ignition light ,
So before running it for much longer , see if your oil pressure gauge is coming up , and maybe check your battery with a multi meter to see if it's being charged ,
Its a way of life not a hobby

Had those symptoms on a Series 1 Land Rover and if I remember correctly it was dynamo failure.
Maybe not relevant to Jag tho?

This applies only to earlyish 4.2 litre cars. The 3.8 had the conventional warning light driven from the dynamo circuit

I had this symptom / issue on my 1968 series 1.5, and i was confident that looking at the volt meter my alternator was charging despite the red light being on. I found the previous owner had used a normal cylinder flasher relay in place of the 3aw relay ( located by the voltage regulator) on the charging circuit, probably because the 3aw is not so cheap and not so readily available. Hope you get your issue sorted.
