We have just tried to get a reading on the laptop with the programme downloaded, and the ignition on. Nothing, so we checked all the connections, all good. I went back the autosports recommendations and see that they recommend their "tested: usb connector at 15 dollars plus 46 dollars postage. The connector I have I bought off Ebay?.I don't really want to throw my money away, but where did you guys purchase your connectors ??I really need to do this myself as I can just se an outfit with a rolling road clocking up the hours trying to get a reading when there is a fault that hopefully I can discover first?..

Have you read through the Megajolt thread? It specifically says you need a converter based on either the FTDI or Prolific chipset and make sure you have the latest drivers loaded. e.g. one of these three:

PS: can you post your questions in the Megajolt support 'sticky' thread please as it acts as a single repository for EDIS experiences. We also delete non specific 'Upgrade instruction' posts to keep down the clutter.

I bought 3 or 4 different cheapies off Ebay; from memory all but one worked.
The other thing to do is to try a different computer.

Similar Problems with mercedes star diagnosis Systems. The usually do only Work on real com - Ports, because they do Direct- adressing to the Memory Adress of the com Port.
Now, most of the cheap cards do not Emulate the com port's Adress properly, because more Modern Software does not need it anymore.
Only Solution is to get a serial Card (i have a pcmcia one) which does Emulate the 2f8/ 3e8 Adress Base properly, so the Software does not get confused.
My Card is an STLabs serial pcmcia Card, i think Moschip 0x9710, did Cost 25 or so on ebay, compared to 10 euros for the non-working no-names.

Start with this one:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Prolific-PL23 ... 35d56b230e
It is only ?9 and is built on the Prolific chipset which has been proved to work with Megajolt. It looks exactly like the one I bought. Alternatively put the words 'Prolific usb serial ' in a search of eBay and lots will turn up. This is mine if it helps:
