#1 Series 1 wiper motor wires

Hi All,

I am part way through restoring my 65 LHD 4.2 FHC and was in the process of converting the windscreen wiper motor to park on the correct side for a RHD car. I have read some of the threads on this conversion; swapping the wires over etc, but I have been slow to notice that my wires are not the same colour as are being described. I attempted to bench test the motor and was not sure which wires powered it. After a little more reading I now notice that I have only 4 wires; two brown (one to earth) and two red??
This car has never run in my possession, but the internals of the wiper are in good condition. The wiring of this car was ?customised? and had rocker switches (not Series 2).
I am now wondering if someone has done a rewiring job on the wiper motor, so my first question is were any of these motors equipped with only 4 wires brown and red; I suspect not. The numbers on the motor are DL3 GC88, 754040, dated 12.10.61, so I assume this might be from a 3.8 and not original to my car?
I see in the archives that Christopher did a very good explanation of which colour wires went where, but I am still not sure, so wonder if someone has a photo. One final question; the case on my motor is black and looks like it always was. Most of the motors I have seen appear to be silver grey; which is correct?

Thanks,

Paul

I posted this message on Jag-Lovers as well and John Carey sent me some photos and a sketch of the colours and internal connections, for which I am very grateful.

It transpires that I am also missing the thermal cut-out that attaches to the side of the housing.

Is this obtainable or do I need to resort to an external one?

If so does anybody know what temperature value I would need?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul -
I'd be amazed if it was available new but would have thought you could find one on a scrap motor. Stoneleigh is always a good source of parts like that.

There is a also a good chance Lucas fitted the same part to other cars of the same vintage.

In fact the S1 cooling fan motor is pretty well identical to the windscreen wiper motor although I don't remember it having the cut-out in it.
May be worth checking though as there are probably more of those motors available because people have swapped them out for modern alternatives.

Hi Joe,

Yes that was my thought too. The cooling fan doesn't have one and I have been reading that they were only fitted to luxury cars and discontinued on some of the later motors.

I have now wired mine to exclude the cut off for the time being at least.
It now works fine on both speeds.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Paul
