#1 Powerlite starter-motor fitting with JT5, Clutch Hose run.

Post by rfs1957 » Mon May 26, 2014 3:30 pm

I am looking to get as much done as possible on motor-JT5-gearbox lump before everything becomes inaccessible again .......

Can someone send me a picture of this area (or comment on mine) showing what consequences (if any) there are regarding the flexible clutch hose and its bracket that (from memory) goes on the top starter-motor bolt.

Image

The Powerlite obviously sits higher and space seems much tighter, I'm concerned that the standard hose may not reach the body-mounted clutch pipe-work.

Much obliged.

#2 clutch hose

Post by jag68 » Mon May 26, 2014 8:11 pm

Hi Rory. On my '68 the top of the hose mounts on a bracket (which is L shaped) that is attached to the body - not the engine. The bracket is shown on p. E.8 of my manual as part #29. It bolts to the upper inner tube frame attachment point (flange attached to the top inner tube) that is closest to the engine. The bolt it attaches to is the lower (towards the front) inside bolt on the flange that attaches the tube to the body. In this position the top pipe is a straight run to it. Sorry no photos.

The bottom bracket goes on the front bolt of the angled reinforcing plate between the block and the bell housing.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I ended up with a compromise that I think gives the best of all aspects - access, aesthetics, limited mods to original etc

Image

I made an angled bracket out of 15/10 sheet that just grips the front edge of the JT5 casting with a slight fold and is held in place with a 1/4 UNC bolt tapped into the JT5.

Image

The Cunifer hose comes up at an angle to the back of the bracket and picks up the original type/length rubber hose,

Image

which itself goes back to Cunifer on the original L-shaped bracket - but which I moved from one front-frame anchorage bolt to another.

Image

All of it clears inlet-manifold and float-bowl stuff and choke cable. The rear carb throttle-return spring post is very close to the Powerlite and might need tweaking on some cars.

Hope this helps someone.
