#1 Water pump and alternator S2 FHC

Post by Gfhug » Fri Aug 22, 2014 8:15 am

Reading elsewhere there is talk of one double V belt connecting both water pump and alternator. Yet mine has two belts and two different size drive pulleys on the engine.

Thinner belt to alternator is about 10mm wide. Thicker one to water pump about 13mm.

Alternator is a 60amp Lucas, but can't see part number on it.

And here is the drive down to the water pump:

Now various questions come along here and follow on from having had a couple of hot experiences. Driving home after buying the car it got hot and we ended up by-passing the Otter switch to keep fans on all the time, and kept cool after that. Then the other day for our first proper run out again got hot. Let her cool down then checked things.
The radiator was quite cool and on removing the radiator cap we had to top up with several kettle fulls of water. Yet the expansion tank was at half measure.
Again today I checked her over and needed about a litre to top up the radiator.
There's no obvious sign of a leak, and the oil isn't looking sludged up with oil/water mix.

1 Do we have an incorrect pump and alternator? (The engine was rebuilt 4000 miles but many years ago by a reputable company, but don't know of subsequent work)

2 Could it be an air lock, or lack of water that was stopping the Otter switch working?

3 The expansion tank cap has 15 on it, presumably meaning 15 lbs. Now it should be 7 for this engine/car. Could this be a cause of problems?

Any advice or suggestions will be most appreciated, and, no, I've not resorted to breaking an egg into the radiator yet to stop leaks!

Thanks
Geoff

Is the radiator cap a blank with no spring release valve?

Hi Geof. Have you set the heat control to hot when filling to ensure the whole system is full......Steve

Hi Steve, I was assured the heater system was fully checked.
However, maybe I should go for a run with the heater on and get the system fully flowing, might be a couple of days before I can do that.
Thanks for ideas.

Geoff,
To answer your concern about your belt configuration, the S2 layout differs from the S1. S1 had the "double vee" belt with a single belt driving both water pump and alternator/dynamo, the S2 had the two-belt setup you describe for your car.

John, thank you. Despite reading through the service manual I hadn't discovered that. This forum is excellent for the help members are willing to give. I hope to get to the experience to reciprocate. Re-reading Clausager's book shows the change to 60 amp alternator.

By the way, is there a technical reason for changing the s1 setting to S2 with the double belts? On my 1.5, i have the S2 setting
