Hi everybody,

May I ask if the black hose in the picture below is correct for a fuel line?
The fuel hose upstream the bowl (yellowish) seems to be original, while the black one between the bowl and the filter is different.
I am concerned because that black hose has small cracks and needs to be changed.



Also these black hoses apparently have been put when the PO installed a cylinder filled with catalyst balls down the fuel filter.



My engine is a 3.8, year 1964. I understand from what I read here that apparently it is not necessary to have such catalyst for using unleaded fuel as the valve seats are already hard enough. If so, it would be useless but would not do any harm either and could stay there. Anybody can confirm?

Should be white nylon pipe which presses on to the unions (no clips).

So that was incorrect. Surprising and worrying that it was fiited for such an important safety element.

Looks like they have done it so they can put in the aftermarket filter, as there's no filter element in the factory filter.

I saw a filter that looked like this a while back and, on mentioning it to the owner, he pointed out that the filter was a simple horizontal gauze at the top of the glass bowl. I don't know if this was a standard fitting at some point or not.

Yes, the gauze is correct on my 63 but they also fitted a paper filter inside the bowl at one stage

So besides the hoses, my filter arrangement seems to be incorrect
Is that risky re any dust that may go through the gauze?

There are gauze filters in the SU's anyway (providing they are still there!) so unlikely to be a problem. However, for the cost involved - new filter element + length of nylon fuel hose - you may as well put it back to the way Jaguar intended.

Thx for the feedback, David, I'll do that for sure, just a matter of procuring it.
I had not thought of the issue before I saw a picture of correct hoses in this invaluable forum.
I had not understood either the role of the bowl (actually the place of the paper fuel filter), thinking it was there just for decantation of dust/debris, especially because in my car there was another fuel filter downwards the line.

What is the white and green thing clipped to the engine frame with "4 euro" written on it?

That's the catalyst I was referring to at the beginning.
Apparently not needed but not harmful either.
