4.2 E- type starter motor problems?

hi there everyone
having a little trubble with my starter motor at the moment on my 4.2 FHC S1.5,
when trying to start the car its giving a whirring noise the starter motor is just spinning but not throwing in to engage the flywheel,
I took the starter motor off (what a swine to get to!) and bench tested it with no problems at all, the starter was spinning exelent and throwing in EVERY single time I tried it, no problems!
so I re-fitted it to the car only to get the same result - spinning but not throwing in!
after spinning and spinning sometimes the engine will turn but only for a cupple of seconds then whirring again,
im thinking could it be a relay of some sort that's on its way out?????
any sugestions, help, wireing diagrams will be very appreciated!
(sorry about all the spelling mistakes, I diddent listen much in English lessons at school, was more into playing netball with the girls! lol!)

If your ring gear is ok its probably the solenoid which engages the gear onto the flywheel via a plunger and lever arm in the end housing. When you bench tested it I assume you put 12v onto the solenoid as well ?

thank you for your reply,
yes I put 12v onto the solenoid to test it and it threw out everytime without fail and my ring gear is fine in very good condition,
this is what's confuseing me, everything (in theory) seams to be fine?!

Hi Jamie.....have a look in the knowledge base at the tech section electrical and details how to test starter motor........if its spinning but not turning over engine then some drive damage...Steve

Check the pinion clutch to see if its slipping when the pinion engages with the flywheel.

IIRC There should be an alloy distance piece , about 5mm thick , which goes between motor and bellhousing. If you have forgotten to put this back, the pinion will not engage with the ring gear

... And this is kept in place via two thin Iron tubes. About 10 mm outer Dia.

I have lost One of them, but the second is there, so I made a new One cutting a piece of an alloy tube of and made-to-fit.

Just a thought - check the condition of the earth strap. I have seen similar problems because the earth strap to the engine is corroded or otherwise & makes a poor electrical connection with the engine. The current is enough to spin the pinion but not enough to turn the engine.
