#1 Bonding Bonnet Components

Post by Simonpfhc » Sun Dec 28, 2014 4:51 pm

Hi All,

I am just about to order some Sikaflex for the bonding process of the the bonnet components. According to the Sika Primer chart, I am going to need Sika Activator, Sika 206GP Primer and Sikaflex 221 urethane.

I know others have already been through this process, so can anyone give me an idea as to how much of each product I am going to need?

Cheers,
Simon

I only used Sikaflex 221 in a tube, no activators or anything else and it's stayed bonded for the last 10 years, did I do it wrong?

Sorry Simon can't remember how many tubes but do remember it was expensive. Couldn't have been more than two tubes.

Thanks for your reply Dave.

I was indeed planning on just using the 221. It looks like Sika are now recomending the use of activator and primer. Maybe it is due to people priming the metal first and not just bonding directly?? I've already got one tube of 221 that I used to seal each end of the sills to the shut panels and judging by the consistency, two sounds about right for the bonnet.

I currently only have very thin etch primer on my bonnet so may not need anything else. The factory didn't use anything else and the joints I removed from my bonnet were still all good after 53 years!

Cheers.

I bonded mine to bare metal no primer underneath.
