#1 Alloy steering column housing

Post by gmunro » Thu Jan 08, 2015 2:04 pm

I read in Chris Rooke's book, E-Type Jaguar DIY Restoration & Maintenance, that during the rebuild of his Series 2 E-Type, he replaced the original composite steering column housing attached to the bulkhead (engine side) with one made of alloy. I have tried to contact Chris but without success and have phoned around various parts suppliers but cannot find anybody who stocks the alloy housing. Does anybody know where I can source an alloy steering column housing? Many thanks.

OK, I'll bite! Why would you want to use an alloy column housing rather than the composite version?

My current one is totally knackered and has been repaired on several occasions by the look of it. I just thought the alloy one would look nice all polished and shiny. I take it you are suggesting I should really stick with originality and source a new composite one?

It would seem the sensible option give it is only there to retain the seal and prevent the ingress of fumes. Paint it silver hammer tone and it will look the part.

While it does seem a bit daft, having seen Chris Rookes alloy one, I too have a hankering for an alloy one. The UK version does seem a bit flimsy in comparison to the lhd one. I know the lhd one needs to be stronger hence being alloy.

Is this one aluminium, it looks so from the picture, and I do wonder if the AS suffix indicates aluminium. Of course I stand to be corrected, maybe this is just a remade version in light grey composite.

Would buff up nicely to match Chris Rooke's page 173

As far as I can remember, on my LHD car the aluminium part with the function of the "nose and gaitor" for the passing of the steering column also has the pivot for the accelerator pedal. Hence, the part is made of aluminium for strength. I'm not with my car right now, so can't take pictures.

See item 6 on this SNG page

Hi David,

I have contacted the Jag Shop and they have confirmed that theirs is the fibreglass version - they haven't heard of the alloy one. As for the SNG Barrett Item 6, this is a throttle pedal housing which, of course, on the S1, is alloy but not linked to the steering column housing.

I fear we will have to keep researching - pity Chris Rooke has not responded to my email to him on the subject!

Kind regards,

George

Give Ken Verity a call and mention the Forum. If anyone knows it will be him (he also worked on Chris's car). 01709 838352

Hi George........i knew that id seen this talked about before.... see this link. It mentions the ally cover was obtained from ken verity........right hand composite covers are part no BD19714 where the LHD units are ally but they do also have a moulding for the throttle linkage.....possibly this could be cut off and ground down? ..Steve viewtopic.php?t=2242&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Guys : I have just spoken to Ken Verity 0n 01709 838352 and he is able to supply the alloy steering column housing. Costs: ?35.00 raw and ?45.00 polished. He is somewhat busy at the moment and has asked me to call back next Thursday re delivery etc and would welcome any further enquiries from other E-Type owners.

Thanks all for your input regarding this. Kind regards,

George
