#1 Trouble fitting door brackets - BD32355

The foam padded door brackets (BD32355) were missing from my car but I was able to get some from Richard Smith. Although the semi-circular foam was shot, so it was replaced with foam rubber with the same profile and similar firmness:

However fitting them causes the remote control link from the internal door lever to foul against the regulator linkages. I suspect why a PO didn't refit them.
The remote control link passes the bracket where it is angled just below the top mounting screw. The foam on this section is pushing the link into the path of the regulators.
Should the foam carry on along the angled section? I assumed so as I understood its purpose was to dampen vibrations in the link, otherwise I can't see what the bracket is achieving. Am I missing something obvious?
