#1 Air filter box support

Post by vikla » Sun Mar 01, 2015 11:55 am

Hi

A rather small point regarding the fixing of the air filter box to its support bracket.
My box has 2 holes in the bottom, one dead in the centre and one offset a few centimeters.
The support bracket has a ovalish hole in it and in it a plastic fixing for a selftapping screw to go into. It looks as if the screw should be inserted through from the box, however that is rather impractical.

Looking on SNGB website they show a stud fitted to the support bar, Item 8 in the picture (Part No. C12705) with 2 washers and a 5/16 UNF nut on the end.

I wonder if anyone can explain how it fits together.
In practice does everyone just let the box rest on the support bar and not worry about it?

Steve . Mine both have a stud, or its equivalent ie a bolt welded to the support bracket , which pokes upwards through the central hole in the canister which is secured by a large washer and a wingnut so that it can be unscrewed in a matter of a minute or so

Mine is the same with a 'plastic' fixing in a slotted hole. I use a self tapper with a large penny washer under the head, works a treat.

Just checked with Clausager originality guide.
It says there was a change to the filter box and support bar in Jan 1966, which presumably is the plastic nut in the support bar.
So mine is original it would appear and therefore on all late S1 4.2s and S2s.

Personally i don't bother with the stud or wingnut. I find it very useful to be able to remove the air filter canister without first removing the top and the cartridge, so I just glued some sheet rubber along the top of the support bracket to avoid any rattling or damage to the paint and rely on the two bolts into the side of the canister to hold it in place. Removal takes 10 seconds and provides great access to the oil filter.

But it's not "original" :D

Early ones have a stud, the later ones use the plastic insert with a self tapper through from the top. The later design is easier to remove and replace. Ideally use a magnetised screwdriver.

Thread revival!
There are several posts asking about how the air filter is attached.

and this one from Steve (vikla). My question is about the stud and the support. :helpsign:
A 5/16 threaded stud (both sides) for the early cars and from 1966 a self tapper with a plastic insert in the support hole. But no explanation was given, how the threaded stud is supposed to be used (pictured in the 1st post). The support bar has an elongated hole, but if I would use the washer and nut and the stud from below the support bar, it needs to be held in place until the air filter goes on from the top. If this is the idea, why not use a simple bolt from the top through the air filter and a washer and nut from the bottom (this is how it was on my E-type). In both cases, the air filter cannot be removed from the top and easily. It would be logical to weld the stud to the support, but I doubt that this was meant to be. :scratchheadyellow:
You can probably tell that the Corona lock down has me in its grip :seeingstars: . Anyway, if one of you could shed some light on this...
