Hi Folks
I am sure some will be shaking their heads at my lack of knowledge but I cannot work out why it is necessary to release the handbrake when bleeding brakes as instructed by the Haynes Manual. What is the reason?

There is no reason for it . The Haynes manual is wrong .

My suspicion is that Haynes manuals are constructed, to a degree, from generic text. Maybe some handbrakes are hydraulic...

The manual assumes whoever is bleeding the brakes at the rear is positioned under the car as the rear brakes are inboard and that maybe you have the car on ramps or similar. It's a matter of safety, of course you would not want it to roll off and flatten you!

If you've not started the bleeding here is a useful post on an easy way of doing it:

Thanks for the replies.
johnney I think you misread the post, the situation you describe is what the Haynes Manual recommends.
