Can anyone advise on the best/correct type of gasket for the fuel tank sump?
When I removed the sump to clean it out it had a black rubber/neoprene seal but the replacement I ordered was a fibre washer, which refused to seal no matter how much I tightened it. The faces of the tank and sump looked in good condition.
Mine is a Feb 1962 car chassis 885626

Original was cork or fibre but you need to make sure all surfaces are clean and true. Hylomar might help.

I feel your pain. I had the same problem last year. I also ordered two different types of seal from SNGB, both of which deformed when the sump was.tightened.
I ended up making my own from, as David says- cork gasket. I made the seal much bigger than the original. This meant that the diameter counteracted the deformation problem.
I also ordered a new seal and foam packing ring that fits around it as an insurance policy. But still no leaks to date, fingers crossed.
+1 for the Blue Hylomar by the way.
Cheers
