#1 Rear brake dust seal clips

Post by Gfhug » Tue May 05, 2015 9:38 am

Fitting new seals and pistons to my rear brakes (standard S2 calipers). The old dust seal had a circular clip to hold it in place on the caliper, but SNGB don't know of these clips.
Does anyone know of them and where to get them? The old ones could be re-used, but it'd be nice to have new.

Thanks
Geoff

Hi Geoff,

I am no Series Two expert, but I don't think the Series Two rear calipers had a clip to hold the seals on.

However, I have used later XJ6 calipers and they do.

The seal kit I bought which included them was AAU3380.

Thanks Paul, those XJ6 caliper seals have the clips I need, will chat to SNGB about them.
My calipers are a bit different to the garage gazette ones, maybe mine are odd and the seal sets I have are therefore wrong.

It seems my calipers are from an XJ and need the seal sets Paul highlighted.
When or why they were changed from normal E Type S2 who knows, the pistons seem the same size so shouldn't see any reason for a difference in braking.

All makes it not straight forward and frustrating, but I'm learning more and more about the cars.

The XJ SII rear calipers are _almost_ a straight swap. Same piston dia, radial center distance, and count (i.e. retarding force is the same). The dust covers are different which means that the piston ends are also slightly different IIRC the later seals need the pistons with a thin lip.

If you are upgrading by fitting the XJ calipers to an S, 420, or early E diff, you will need to grind a relief between the mounting lugs as they foul on the web of the diff nose. Takes a couple of minutes with an anglegrinder to remove about 3/8". Hint: Trial fit the Calipers BEFORE you have them plated....

All in all, a doddle and the dust seals are better.

Andrew
