Tuning the doors

Hi there,

I don't know what is a "standard" gap to be consider between a door and the body. 3mm 5mm?

Try a Euro, except Greek ones may be too narrow.

USA, I use a wooden paint stick. About .125". = 3.125mm

Pound coin is 3.15mm thick, which is pretty darned close to a US 1/8" paint stick (3.175mm)

Euro coin is 2.33mm, and the 2 Euro is 2.2mm ... way too thin for door gaps

Remember if that you are adjusting door gaps (at the early stages of bodywork) using filler or lead or welding rod that the colour & clear coats of paint will tighten / reduce the gaps quite a bit. I also recommend to use a radius gauge for sizing and checking the external radius on the body edges. I have mine from my old job which involved building show cars and prototypes. Very usefull to get the exact finish. They look like this :-

My view that came from a wise old head...If it looks right it is right. Old cars do not look good with tight gaps and the way the E type doors open should be observed before committing ones self to a tight gap.

In my opinion what is more important than the gap width is that the gap is the same even width all round, on the doors, the boot lid and the bonnet edge. A car will look better with a larger even gap than with a tight uneven one.

You'll need to pay attention to how much gap there is as the doors open over the front curved surface and also at the leading edge of the bootlid as to whether these clear the bodywork. There is no point making the gap so small that it risks ending up chipping the paint at a later date.
