Removing speedometer series 1

Hi all

Having issues with my speedometer so want to remove it from the dash and check over the cable and guage. What's the best way to remove the guage and get access to the speedometer cable?

I've tried removing the dash top as a better way to get access to the gauges by undoing the 4 bolts holding the top on but when trying to lift the top off I noticed that it appears that the vents are connected some tubing. Will the tubing simply come out as I lift the dash top off or do I need to individually unscrew and remove each of the 4 vents?

Any help much appreciated

Hi Trev - I accessed mine from below - removed the under-dash trim, then lay upside down in the footwell (it's not as bad as it sounds!), reached up and undid the knobs which hold it to the dash. You should be able to see and if necessary label any connectors at the same time for ease of refitting.

If I remember correctly, I extended the steering wheel as far backwards (towards the driver) as it would go then juggled it out of the dash.....

Tried accessing the gauge underneath but found it a bit of a struggle so starting removing the top dash panel. Will have another go tomorrow. Does anyone have a picture/diagram of the knobs that I need to loosen in order to free the gauge?

I'm sorry but I don't have any pictures to share, but I can suggest that you either use a mirror and torch to have a look (whilst your head is in the floorwell and looking up) or even try to stick a mobile phone behind the dash and fire off some pictures.

Point is (as you've no doubt realised) once you figure out which knurly knobs to twist (I'm not joking) and how to undo the speedo cable, and pull how to pull of the lamp sockets, it's pretty simple job from underneath.

When doing it I sit partially on the sill and stick my hand up behind the dash, so that I'm looking at the face of the speedo whilst my brain is telling my where my hand is. I've found that lying upside down and trying to do it just confuses my hand / eye / brain coordination.

Be prepared for skinned knuckles and some scratches. It's tight behind there.

I would reccomend taking off the dash top. Then you easily see where all the connection are when looking thru the windshield.

Also, take the tacho out first. This is a relatively easy task, and enables you to reach both the speedo cable knurled nut , and the holding down nuts, much more easily, ( and also to some extent to see what you are doing )

Great, sounds like taking the dash top off will help as I've half done the job it probably makes sense to go this route. So I've taken of the 4 nuts holding the dash top in place (2 near a pillars, and 2 behind the fuse panel). however when trying to lift the top off it seems connected to the y shape plastic air vents and tubing. My question is, do I need to remove the vents from the dash top or will the tubing just pop out as I lift the top off? I don't want to risk damaging the tubing or vents

The tubing is just inserted into the vents. Loosen them before taking off the dash top

Yes, just ease them out taking great care not to damage the plastic vents. When they are all clear you can safely lift off the dash top.
