Which would allow travelling at 70 mph in 5th gear with 1944 RPM or in 4th gear at 3043 RPM. A 64% difference. Don't think that would equate to a 64% difference in fuel though :(
Fuel is about ?5.00 per gallon (?1.10 per litre * 4.54)
With an improvement of 4 mpg with the 5 speed it would also take about 100,000 miles to recover ?3,500 for the gearbox etc.
Another interesting calculation is the torque ratio.
Given the engine produces max HP at 5,400 RPM (Mine is the 4.2 litre with twin carbs) and max torque is at 4,000 RPM. The gears should ideally stay within this power band.

So it seems the .63 ratio would be the better way to go for leisure. Any error in logic or maths I will apologise for now :D
