Hello,
I am a new member to the E-Type club and E-Type forum from Beds/Bucks border, UK. I decide I just had to get hold of E-type after 10 years of vintage driving in a Alvis 12/50, I need something with a bit more go and synchromesh! so I have been searching for nearly a year. The prices in the UK were getting out of my budget so I looked further afield and found that I could afford a E-Type in Denmark if I acted quickly and take advantage of the strong pound so I am now the owner of a black series 2 FHC coupe and I am now smitten with this black cat!
Sorry to start my first post with a technical question, but I thought while I am waiting for the UK registration I would have a look at why I am only getting 20 to 30 psi oil pressure regardless of engine speed.
I am changing the oil pump for a high volume type and checking the oil filter assembly for any problems when I noticed that the metal filter disc on the housing is missing so the filter element is unable to seal! could this be my problem and if so where can I get hold of one as it is not shown on any part supplier Illustrated parts catalogue,

I will let others share more precise knowledge as to causes of low pressure (stuck relief / control ball-valve maybe), however I would think that the missing steel end plate would only result in little or no filtering of the oil. I can't quite figure out how it would change any pressure.
And apologies in advance if you didn't mean this end plate item 6. I've re-read your post and see that you mention mesh & filter housing. Still, don't think it would effect the pressure. The pressure is contained by the outer metal canister, and regulated by steel balls and springs.

Thank you for your quick reply, I do have the end plate item 6, it is the other disc plate on the filter housing itself which is not shown in the illustration.
I think you are right it would only affect the filtration, I have checked the spring loaded valve (item 13) and it seems OK and the little relief valve appears to seat OK, I have yet to remove the sump and check the oil pump.

Yeah sorry, of course, I forgot the oil pump rotor :-) Ever heard of "the ladder of inference" - the brain filters out all information that doesn't match desired result, aka your don't see the trees for the forest.
My money's on the rotor & housing worn out of tolerance. Easy to measure with feeler gauges. Easy to change and/or upgrade. Almost a preventative maintainance item on any engine rebuild / work.

Hi,
Just a update to my oil pressure/filter problems, I purchased a end plate (item6) and enlarged the hole to fit the filter housing that seems to do the trick. I fitted a high flow oil pump even though the original pump looked OK, after fitment my oil pressure increased to about 30psi with no variation with engine revs, so I replaced the oil pressure sender unit now I have 40psi on idle and 60psi when above idle, so now fixed!

The electronic oil pressure senders in the E Type are notoriously inaccurate.
Sadly, replacement senders are often not much better.
The nature of the design of the senders does not enable them to be calibrated.
If you have low oil pressure at the dash gauge the first thing to do is to attach a mechanical/Bourdon gauge and ascertain what your oil pressure really is. Once you know this you can proceed.

We have have swapped around 4 electric gauges to wet in the last couple of months due to low oil pressure readings. In all instances the engine was fine.

Hi All...There is a way to calibrate/alter the oil guages reading. ....normally they read low this is due to a low current through the meter caused by a high resistance from the sender
In an electrical Cct current is increased if resistors are put in parallel....so by putting a resistor (this can be from the sender side of the guage to Eth and hidden behind the dash ) across the sender the current is increased and the guages will read higher...I started with 150ohm on mine and increased it till the guage read the same as the known pressure as tested with a wet guage.......you can test the resistance given out from the sender by using an air line on the input and measuring resistance out with a meter..so you will know what resistance is given out for any air pressure in
