series 1 rear light

Hi all does anyone know the length and width / height of the appiture for series 1 FHC rear lights , I know it's not an uniform shape but the outer extremities would be ok . I would measure my wife's but it's tucked up in its carcoon at mo ,and the last time I took the rear light out it took a flippin age to get it back together . so if anyone's got one in bits ?????

My lights are not back in yet after the bare metal respray. I could take a piece of A4 paper and stencil out the shape of the hole, if thats what you're after. Can scan and send on e-mail, then you just need to print at A4 again. Would that work?

or I can just do a width x height quicky if that's good enough ... 180mm one side, and 185mm other side in width of opening in the sheet metal, height 47mm both sides

Another thing I thought about (after I took the dim's) was to use the inner edge of the rubber sealing gasket as the template for the aperture. But I've not checked this theory yet on the car.

Hi David , once again thanks for dimensions, they gave me a good base to work from , I've done one side and the hole is looking good ( well as good as a hole can ) , I've cut it on the small side as I figured I can cut it bigger , but I can't cut it smaller .
I'll post up the photos when I've got both holes / lights in place

Hi Dal,

Just for reference and to others reading this, the aperture does not follow the inner edge of the rubber gasket as it is much smaller and does not follow the reflector area.

I have my rear lights out on a Series 1 4.2 FHC and I will take some photos when I am home tonight to show the difference and the location of the mountings. My lights are held in by three screws with locate in fixed threads in the body.

Hopefully the photos will show this clearly as I have left the outline of the rubber gasket relative to the aperture.

Filler Panel Seating Stop/Tail Lamp

The stop/tail lamp assemblies were each attached to two fixing brackets welded to the lower rear panel assembly. On the OTS there was a filler panel which enclosed the light assembly on each side - #BD18945 and #BD18946:


These allowed rubber/foam seals to be fitted to eliminate exhaust fumes and moisture being drawn into the boot area:


Surprisingly the FHC had no such filler panels and seals:



The build was changed with the S1 4.2 FHC (still trying to find out when) and the filler panels were introduced - same part number as the OTS so no design work required. Perhaps Jaguar thought there was a positive air flow in the FHC which kept the cabin pressurised and prevented fumes getting in. The OTS had no such air flow and owners probably complained of the smell of fuel/oil/exhaust on their luggage - my wife certainly does!

Pic's of my RHS aperture with filler panel, with and without rubber seal.

Using the height of 47mm (and potentially the rubber seal contour) it should be possible to figure out the opening in the bodywork. And yes, I painted the rubber sealing grommet....

The reflection lines are from my transparent corrugated roof, in case anyone was wondering.

Just to close my response, I did say that I would post some photos of my light aperture tonight showing the reference to the sealing gasket outline, but it looks like I was already beaten to it.
