Hello

My 3.8 came with a Denso Hi Torque starter (in a box). I am about to fit it to the car and have assumed that the faceplate has been set in the right place. This however puts the terminal post very close to the block and I am concerned about arcing. Solution is to cover the post with a rubber cover but before I do so I would like some advice on whether this is the usual place for the terminal for these starters? I would post a picture but am not sure how...

I put mine in a 4.2 but yes, the correct position has that terminal quite close to the block - but not too close. Some folks weld/epoxy the upper mounting nut and lock washer to the starter. I didn't and found that nut surprisingly hard to get to, despite the fact that it is in plain sight and seems deceptively accessible.

I would like to use a hi-torque starter. Recommendations on the best model and vendor?

Bob,
Especially since you are in the US, I would use one of the usual major vendors. Although I just installed it last spring, I bought mine from Barratt about three years ago. I think they are all comparable and use the same cheap and reliable Nippondenso motor. Don't forget the access panel for the lower bolt in the right hand foot well and, as I mentioned in a previous post, I would epoxy the top nut and lock washer on the unit for assembly. I'm quite experienced but still found it to be difficult to maneuver with the engine in place and assembled.

Just been fiddling and trying my new high torque starter from Fosseway and it has fixed studs to make the fitting easier.

Just a thought; I purchased one from a very well known vendor in the US. After a short while it packed up. On investigation it was clear that some components were well used and not particularly reconditioned.

I sold it for spares and purchased another which guaranteed new units.
