Series 2 wiper motor into a series 1

Dear all,

I am considering putting a series 2 wiper motor into my series 1, as I am told that it is a better product. I am not concerned about originality, as my car has a multitude of upgrades.

Who told you that? We all accept 'E' Type wipers are a tool of last resort but the S1 DL3 wiper motor is just as effective and reliable as the S2 15W motor. Seems like a lot of work for zero gain.

Sorry to put a spanner in the works ,but why do a company like CMC use the series 2 wiper motor as an upgrade if there is no improvment ?

Depends what you expect from this "improvement". Wiper efficiency is down to the blades and arm tension. The motor operates the rack to give a side to side motion in a choice of two speeds. The original Lucas DL3 and DL3A seemed to do all of that for seven years of 'E' Type production without complaint. The Lucas 15W permanent magnet motors were a round body design and may well be more powerful (higher torque) but I have yet to see the wipers on my OTS struggle in 55,000 miles of driving including rain, hail, snow and heavy winds. The DL3 motors are becoming increasingly rare so encouraging owners to switch to the more plentiful 15W provides a supply to owners who want their car original. If you want a proper 'upgrade' fit an intermittent wiper switch. Details in the Upgrades Forum.

Edit: forgot to add, the 15W has an integrated parking switch like the DL3A so good if your rack mounted switch has fallen apart. The higher torque of the 15W would allow the use of stronger arm springs to increase blade pressure but I don't know where you would get any.

Stick to the S1....it works just fine...so long as your arms and pivots are all free of course...and if they are not a S2 wiper motor probably won't really help.
I rebuilt mine and the wipers wipe.....
