#1 Which distributor

Post by jingleycatjaguar » Sun Feb 21, 2016 6:36 pm

My series 1 4.2 badly needs a new distributor as it is really worn.

I have a very old Luminition on it at the moment that works fine.
I also have an XJ6 electronic distributor, amplifier, and coil from a very low mileage car that died of terminal rust.

Im looking for an easy option to get rid of the wear, a sort of plug and play.
So do I use the XJ6 set up as it is ? Convert the XJ6 to work with the Luminition or buy a complete replacement system. If so which one?

Steve

Think 4.2 cars have Lucas 22D6 distributors. Wiser heads will know. Not sure if you could use your XK one.

Pretty certain you can get 22D6 rebuilt ones or the electronic 123 distributor people do one for the 4.2.

And there is a well know auction site. Distributors do show upmfrom time to time!!!

Hi Steve,
I have also tried different systems and now finally found the EDIS Megajolt. This is without doubt the very best I have experienced. Engine is running stable at idle and to me it feels that there are lots of extra horse power and torque.
Read the top sticky tread under E-type upgrades.
A bit of a pain to install but according to me well worth the effort.

You could have it rebuilt by the Distributor Doctor.

Hi Steve...as an easy cheap quick option you could get a plug and play unit here this will get you up and running http://www.simonbbc.com/distributors?ze ... 07c2a476f0
Then send your original off to the Distributor doctor for a refurb....think he has quite a long turn around time

Jay (Distributor doctor) told me he usually does rebuilds in batches, typically a 5 week turnaround, which was about how long it took for a Daimler V8 Saloon Dizzy I sent him last year. He does outstanding work. He said he keeps the more common units ready for exchange, all they need are the mech advance installed, so an exchange would be a lot faster than a rebuild (the Daimler is an oddball dizzy).

If originality isn't a big concern I highly recommend the 123/tune... you can set it up with two curves (road/track) and switch between the two with a switch, has a rev limiter, etc, etc.

Just stick the XJ6 setup on - it is far better than any addon electronic system which in my experience have significant reliability issues - some people find they never give trouble, and others - including me - have repeated failures

Agree totally with Chris. You have a factory low mileage electronic kit made for that engine so it's a no-brainer. Just be sure to earth the AB14 casing to a cool alloy heatsink plate. They were originally bolted to the fuel injection inlet plenum but I attached mine to a chunk of 1/4" dural mounted bottom right front in the cool area near the dizzy.

Seems like its going to be the XJ6 unit that I am going to use. Does anyone know where the two wires from the amplifier and the one from the distributor go please. I can set it up on the bench to make surt it all works as it did when I removed it from the car.

I thought there was a twin cable plug and socket that went from dizzy into the side of the amp - impossible to get wrong? Will check tomorrow. Wiring is in XJ manual.

As I thought. You can't really hook this system up wrong. The distributor lead has a unidirectional plug that goes into the amp box. The other lead going from amp to coil has male and female connectors to the respective coil terminals with the same white/black wire etc.

Thanks for all the help. Ive got it out of the box that it has been in for a few years and started to give it a clean. It should be a vast improvement over the very worn distributor thats in at the moment.
