#1 Remove Chrome Cover from Lock Assembly
I would like to rechrome the cover seen when the door is opened. How do you remove the chrome cover from the lock assembly on door BD20095 and BD20096? And after removal how do you put it back on so it stays attached?

This is the actual lock . It is not a cover. You will need to remove the door trim, detach the spring link from lock barrel to the lock , detach the long link to the inner handle, undo the securing screws and remove the whole apparatus

Thanks for the procedure to remove the lock assembly. Now that it's out of the door how does the chrome piece come off? Can it be removed and re-attached?

There may be others who have tried it, but I think that if you remove the chromed area you will have endless problems trying to get it all back together, because as you can see the gear wheel is positively located by the chromed bit . The makers ( Wilmot breeden ? ) must have had special equipment to peen the shaft over and thus hold it all together

Same problem with the lock receivers on the door jam - you can't take them apart in a way that will allow you to re-assemble them.

David Turner (who has written about his brilliant S1 OTS restoration in the E type Club mag and done a series of videos) has a practical mod that allows you to remove the chrome cap, clean/oil the lock easily, and replace the cap. Basically he has replaced the peened-over pins with threaded items. The mod is visible. The video is at

My friend Manfred has made some pins that allow you to take off the chrome lock plate while the lock is still in the door, There is a oil hole in the plate but this will allow you to oil or grease the working parts, The distances between the door B pillar & the chrome plate is quite large so the screws do not need to be flush,
( I am sure the purists will NOT be happy with this mod )
Unquote.
David promised to prepare drawings of the two pins when he gets a spare moment.
