#1 SU carbs, slack in levers

The three Throttle Lever Spindle Assemblies (C24927) all have a fair amount of slack in the gap of the fork where they attach to the carb spindles. The fork width being wider than the spindles such that there is a reasonable backlash/slack to be taken up before the throttles start to open.

Is this normal?

The fork widths are all the same, so either designed like this or identical wear.

Well, it was always the way they were designed, particularly in the old days , so as to prevent any side movement on the connecting shaft ( used in BMC installations ) or the throttle spindle binding the mechanism up , and to prevent any stickiness in the action from holding the butterfly open. Provided the arrangement is such that all 3 forks reach the spindles at exactly the same time, i.e all 3 open simultaneously , I would not worry about it

You can take some of the slack out by adjusting the eccentric sleeve on the bulkhead.

The first bell-crank up from the pedal link has eccentric travel stops that most people think are just spacers. By slackening off the mounting through-bolt you can rotate the eccentrics to adjust fully open or fully closed limits. However, there should be some slack in the compound throttle levers to prevent the butterflies 'hanging' on the linkage mechanism. It is not there to be dialled out, just made equal and in synch.

Imagine that, something eccentric on an E Type :roll:

All three forks reach the spindles at the same time, which is good, although there does seem to be some slack that could be taken up.

We (well at least I) learn something new everyday.

If you have a lot of play in the accelerate pedal before it bites or you get a loud clang when you release the pedal quickly you can use the eccentric to improve things. Also the control rods can be adjusted for length by loosening the end nuts. There is a lot of adjustment available so you can get the butterflies to open at whatever point you want them to. Most E-Type's seem to have a 1/4" or more of pedal travel before anything happens and I find it quite disconcerting when trying to drive smoothly in traffic or pressing on. Well worth spending 30 minutes getting it just right.

Could somebody tell be where that spring #2 attaches to at the top ?

I fear my having used Dibond to form footwell trim boards may cock up access to this point, but it would be nice to know what form that anchorage originally took.

Rory, I don’t regard it as sad, as it can remind us of the valuable contributions he made to this forum and the fine gentleman he was.
I checked my throttle pedal but then realised the S2 has a return spring on the shaft of the pedal rather than a separate one, so can’t help you there.
