#1 MISFIRE ?

Post by Bakergt40 » Sat Apr 02, 2016 2:18 pm

Hi all, I have just had some upgrades on my 64 Series one 3.8 fhc.
I had a 123 ignition system amongst some other items carried out by
E type UK. I wanted to have the car back this weekend and they ensured it was but on test they said there was a misfire and needed it back to rectify this, although they were unsure at present what it was.
I didn't have the problem before the upgrade.
I know they will sort it but thought I'd ask the question on the forum.
If you accelerate at a reasonable pace the engine feels like it shuts down for a split second then off it goes again, this all happens at between 2.5 - 3 k revs in any gear.It can happen 4 or 5 times and doesn't go away even when well warmed up. Next time you accelerate its there again.
If you drive quite slowly it don't happen.
You can go past the 3.5k revs and it almost clears completely.
I don't think its fuel but they did adjust the carb linkages as the carbs were no opening fully.
Any suggestions or questions appreciated... fire them at me.

Replace the 123 with a rebuilt standard dizzy and test again.

Agree, it sounds like the distributor. Perhaps the wrong advance curve is currently set. No doubt that they will sort it out for you.

I found the new electronic ignition has improved the smoothness of the acceleration but just needs that glitch sorted.
Other upgrades are ally radiator, complete new bushes to the suspension, steering, steering rod ends etc. etc. and new Koni shocks all round.
These also have transformed the handling substantially.
Quite a lot of other parts replaced and a fresh MOT.
I'm happy with the results but they don't come cheap as you know.

I also think the glitch is in the distributor, there having it back next week to sort it.

Thanks for info
Any more thoughts keep them coming.

AltyIan had a similar problem, He ended up replacing the 123 with a new standard distributor and now the engine runs and idles perfectly. He documented his problems in his recent restoration posts with several replies from others with similar difficulties.

As Simon says there have been lots of reports of problems with the 123 and many restorers refuse to fit them. Get your original dizzy back and get it restored by Distributor Doctor http://www.distributordoctor.com/ About the only electronic upgrade I would do would be to add Magnetronic to the DD restored item.

Hi, something weird happened today.
I was heading over to e type uk so that they could sort the misfire and as driving along with the car misfiring on acceleration around 2.5-3 k revs
I decided to put on the heating.
On putting the heater fans on the misfire went away.
After testing this thoroughly during the journey turning fans on and off I suspected that the fans when on reduced the voltage of the car,
For some reason this reduction in voltage made the car run perfectly.
I still have the original Dynamo on the car.
Could higher voltages effect the 123 system ?
Weird or what

Hi,
AS Simon and David said get of your 123 and came back to the traditionnal.
They run the 24h du Mans with Lucas or others distributor. 123 doesn't exist at this time and they run fast and longer without problems.
Try to understand how work your distributor, you'll see it's really easy to maintain.
And at last if it's not the 123, you are the happy owner of the one which work properly!

Thats really interesting.

I have had exactly the same problems with the 123 and it was about 2700/2800 rpm every time it started. And guess what,..... my car's voltage has been quite high (and I fitted a voltmeter so I can always see what the voltage is) all along. And it wasnt consistently very smooth on tick over either with the 123.

The main problem with the 123 is that unless you have a test bed you are really guessing at the map settings. Even using a laptop connected to the 123 and making adjustments with it running I found it very much guesswork.

The moment I fitted a points dizzy the engine has been smooth at tick over and no signs of of misfires or hesitation on acceleration at all.

I bet with the right knowledge and set up it would work fine but for amateurs like me, best well left alone

It appears that the voltage at the battery is around 16 volts which is too high.
It is most likely the voltage regulator that is at fault, hopefully it's not the Dynamo . If it is I'll most likely replace it with a Dynator.
E type uk has ordered a new regulator.
I'm surprised the 123 can't handle the increase in volts.
We'll wait and see if this sorts the problem

Well the problem is now solved.
The dynamo was putting out too high a voltage, something most would not really check if all was running ok.
Not a good idea to have more volts throughout the car anyway.
I was considering a Dynator and starter upgrade at the end of the year but it made sense to upgrade the Dynator now.
Also I had a small issue to a slight noise from the front pads/ disk area which was rotational so for the sake of a small amount of money got e type uk to replace the pads ,disks and Dynator together.
Now the car runs well, better smoother acceleration and the noises are gone, unless they re appear after a few miles.
As I have recently had a hernia operation and didn't fancy laying under a car that I was not familiar yet with, I had e type uk do the many upgrades which although quite costly was carried out extremely well and within my timescales, allowing me to get out and use the car.
I have only done around 800 miles so far but only got the car in October.
Let's hope it keeps going, trouble free.
