#1 Replacing points - mystery part

Post by TrevS » Sat May 14, 2016 1:31 pm

Hi all

In the process of replacing the points in my S1 E-type with a Pertronix electronic ignition kit. I've removed the distributor cap and wire from the coil and then unscrewed the points to remove. However I was expecting to thread the cable through a hole to remove the points and condenser but I have a separate plastic shroud that everything is connected to that has a spade connector point (see pics)

Is this a standard part or after market? It looks to us that we don't need the part at all so can someone please advise

Any help much appreciated

Hi Trevor....yes the shroud is normal......buy a new one and convert it for the pertronix...keep the old in tne car in case you need to revert to points in a breakdown

Hmm, strange. We've managed to remove the shroud completely and fit the distributor cap back on as normal. Therefore can we just remove this part from the car or does the car require it?

It is a standard fitment up to you if you want to leave it off....think its to stop water/ etc getting into the dizzy

I just converted my S2 to Pertronix and left this piece off.

Works fine. :D

Same here, my shroud is kept in boot now and the dizzi cap was placed back on the dizzi housing with no problems encountered. I too was bamboosled some years back when I first changed over.

Thanks guy

As you guys have said it seems you can leave this part out as it's labelled on the SNG Baratt website as a waterproof cover. As I only drive the car in the dry I am going to leave it off for now and leave the original in the boot with the surround should I need it.

Thanks for the help everyone
