Hi,
I want to set the timing on my 63 FHC by finding tdc via cranking the motor by hand. What size is the crank pulley bolt? My largest 32mm socket is too small?
Regards

Put it in top gear and rock it to and fro.

IIRC it's the same as the deep socket used for Mini driveshafts and is 1 5/16" AF

My S2 4.2 litre needs a 1 5/16" AF, maybe they are the same size as the 3.8?

Thanks to all for the responses. I resorted to crawling under the car and measuring the bolt and got the nearest metric equivalent 1/2" drive socket as Halfords didn't have the a/f in that size. For info, it is 34mm. I have now (with the aid of a breaker bar) set the static timing ready for its first startup in 20 years - followed by some dynamic timing if it runs! I'm then going to upgrade to 1-2-3 electronic dizzy.

Richard, you may wish to read comments here and other posts about 1-2-3 before fitting, I have no experience of it just going on comments on the forum.

I have no experience of a 1-2-3 but the vibe from others is they are less than perfect. I have a ?30 powerspark module ( very similar to the pertonix module) on mine). Three years on it is perfect....I would try that first before spending quite a lot on a 123...just my half pence worth...

I do have experience of the 123 as I fitted one 9 years ago. So far so good!

Thanks for the heads-up on the 1-2-3. I have only used one before on my Austin Healey 3000, which was fine and did make a noticeable difference in starting and performance at the top of the rev range. I know people who have run them without problems on MK11 3.8 and S2FHC so I am willing to give it a go. I'll make sure that I keep the original dizzy in working condition just in case!
